Halloween is around the corner. In commemoration of the classic films that I've seen in my life, I give you my top ten. So get ya girl (or girls...) and strap in.

10. Poltergeist - That fuckin clown fucked me up as a shorty. Steven Spielberg brings a horrifying look at a family haunted by spirits in their home that's conveniently sitting on an Indian Burial. RIP Heather 'O Rourke (Carol Anne).

9. The Omen - I think this movie made people think twice about naming their kid Damien. The Richard Donner classic tells the tale of a family who believe their son is actually the spawn of Satan.

8. In the Mouth of Madness - Really innovative and slept on movie by John Carpenter about a Private Investigator who is hired to find horror novelist Sutter Cane who's turned up missing. As he begins reading his books to find clues of his whereabouts he notices things around him are starting to seem too close to the books he's reading. So he must ask himself...is this real??? One of my personal favs (Holla Scrips!)

7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - Tobe Hooper's grizzly semi-adaption of the true story of Ed Gein, a psychotic transvestite who didnt dress up in women's clothes...but in their skin. This movie has become a cult classic among horror movie aficionados (like myself...)

6. Amittyville (1979) - Not since Psycho did a house have so much significance in a movie. Amittyville is the story of the Lutz Family who move into a new home with a bloody history that is ignored by James Brolin and Margot Kidder until the house begins giving horrifying signals that they don't want them there anymore (Get Out!!!!). Real crazy movie for the time.

5. Friday the 13th - Before Jason, there was his moms!!! A classic slasher / whodunit that spawned one of the biggest franchises in the film industry.

4. Psycho - The Grand Daddy of Them All!! During a time when horror movies consisted solely of Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman, Alfred Hitchcock brought a new vision of suspense and terror with Psycho and introduced one of the most famous death scenes ever filmed. I put it at #4 on my list, but only because I it didn't terrify me like people in the 60's. But I still respect it as one of the greatest movies of the genre by far.

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street - Freddy Krueger is born. Based on articles read by Wes Craven about a boy in California who died during his sleep from severe nightmares brought to life one of the most iconic horror characters of all time. This movie scared the shit out of me and most kids my age at the time. A very creative horror movie that also launched an incredible franchise that still lurks today.

2. The Exorcist - Now c'mon...if this movie didn't get under your skin then you don't have a pulse!! William Friedkin's adaption of William Peter Blatty's novel was released in 1973 to an array of emotion from people leaving the theater in horror to vomiting in the theater itself. It made a huge impact and spawned a genre of supernatural / possession terror. It's recognized in many circles as "The Scariest Movie of All Time"...and that's not an easy quote to debate.

1. Halloween (1978) - The Mother of the Slasher Film. Made only on a $322,000 budget, John Carpenter & Debra Hill made one of the classic horror films of our time with a simple story about a boy sent away to a sanitarium for murdering his sister only to escape 15 yrs later to "Come Back Home". The theme music itself is iconic in its own right. It catapulted not only the careers of John Carpenter & Debra Hill, but also of a little known actress & daughter to Tony Curtis & Janet Leigh...Jamie Lee Curtis. If you haven't seen this film at least once, you got fuckin problems. It's shown ever year (for obvious reasons). But it is definitely my #1 favorite horror film of all time. It has what 90% of horror films lack today...Suspense, Suspense, Suspense!!!
